The Bears, who secured key elements of their organization with contract extensions for general manager Jerry Angelo and coach Lovie Smith, have taken care of pro personnel director Bobby DePaul with a three-year extension.
College scouting director Greg Gabriel also is expected sign a multiyear extension.
DePaul and Gabriel have been under strong consideration for top personnel spots elsewhere in the NFL, DePaul with the Redskins and Texans, Gabriel with the Bills before assistant general manager Tom Modrak had another year added to his contract.
DePaul’s deal is expected to average $250,000 for the three years. It also contains an “out” clause that would allow him to leave for a player personnel director job. NFL rules also would allow him to leave for a promotion to general manager.
Insiders say Smith is playing a more prominent role in personnel matters, such as the trade with Washington for safety Adam Archuleta, but DePaul remains a leading figure.
DePaul has primary responsibility for scouting and securing players from the NFL and other pro leagues in addition to scouting Bears opponents. He also has been involved in some contract negotiations.
DePaul, hired in June 2001 as a member of Angelo’s staff, started in the NFL in 1989 with the Redskins, where he worked for defensive coordinator Richie Petitbon under Joe Gibbs. He was a member of the Bengals’ coaching staff for three years before going to the Eagles as a scout.
