* Grayslake Central High School students Greg Hansen and Jennifer Mensch competed at the state level in the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering competition in Champaign last month. Hansen finished first in his competition against 85 other Illinois students. He was awarded a $2,000 scholarship to the University of Illinois. Jennifer Mensch placed 4th out of 105 in her competition.

* Libertyville High School science teacher Matt Leone’s 5th-period earth science class became the first group to take part in a new project developed by Northern Illinois University in conjunction with NASA. Using high-resolution images of Mars from satellite probes, Leone and his students were able to set the stage for future science classes around the country to help planetary geologists interpret Mars data.
