Gardens and yards aren’t just for planners; they’re for dreamers too. I realized this when a friend who lives in a humble third-floor walkup, doesn’t own a trowel, has never repotted a single begonia and routinely curls up with a dense novel (which she reads in the original French or Spanish) confessed her guilty pleasure: home and garden magazines.

This week, we have the perfect Magazine for her–and for those who actually get their hands dirty.

We began planning this issue a year ago, when the weather was warm and branches were full. Dreaming took many forms.

“We cover the spectrum from the most high-tech high-rise to the quintessential Chicago back yard, a patch of green heaven squeezed right in between the neighbors,” explains Art Director David Syrek.

“The weather wasn’t cooperating when we closed this Magazine,” notes Senior Features Editor Brenda Butler. “That really didn’t matter. Pulling out those rich photos of tall lush pines, the lavish Logan Square back yard and the suburban outdoor room provided a tantalizing glimpse of the summer to come.”

Changing the World

Earlier this year we sought your suggestions for ways to improve our world a day at a time, for little or no money and that can be done by almost anyone. We’d like to hear about even more people and ideas, some of which we plan to feature in an issue this summer. For details and a little inspiration, please visit chicagotribune.com/betterworld.
