Aviation plays a role in the history of the neighborhood where ALOFT at The Glen Town Center, a 181-unit apartment development, is in Glenview.

The romance of flight is in the past here, but transportation remains an element that makes this community attractive.

Not even a car, much less an airplane, is needed in this complex, part of a planned community that includes single-family houses and townhouses.

Of course, you might need wheels to get to a job, but it’s easy to imagine leaving the car parked in the underground garage at ALOFT on weekends. With gasoline around $3 a gallon, not having to drive to the movie theater, the park or the grocery store never sounded so good.

This apartment complex, comprising two, three-story red brick buildings that together stretch two blocks, is within easy walking distance of an assortment of amenities, including some, like a children’s museum, that may not have crossed your mind.

ALOFT is across the street from a park, next to restaurants, a department store and an array of boutiques. In addition, a large grocery store, a public golf course, a 10-screen movie theater and Kohl’s Children’s Museum are nearby.

The apartments are at the heart of The Glen, a planned development on the former site of the Glenview Naval Air Station. Remnants of the base, such as an airplane and the sand-colored brick control tower, have been preserved as part of the retail development, not the apartment community.

The complex has an exercise room, a home theater room with stadium-style seating for 12 and a business center with conference room. The luxurious features are seen in the lobby as well as in the units. The lobby has a rich-looking marble floor in a black-and-tan triangle pattern. A domed ceiling is painted in silver leaf.

Watching a movie in the comfort of your home, of course, is an option. The living/dining room in the two-bedroom model we toured can accommodate an oversized sofa as well as an entertainment center.

The front door opens into a foyer with laminate wood floor in a chestnut hue. A double coat closet is on the right; the kitchen is on the left.

The eye is immediately drawn through the kitchen’s open doorway to the granite on a center island. The gray, green and black-speckled counter complements the chestnut-colored floor.

The wooden cabinets in the 7-by-9-foot kitchen are the same warm, brownish-red hue. The appliances, including a stove, refrigerator, dishwasher and built-in microwave, are black. The kitchen also offers a large walk-in pantry at one end of the room.

The island, which has a double sink, separates the kitchen from the living room. The island is long and, due to its size, would be good for entertaining. It’s possible to pull three chairs or four stools to it.

The spacious living/dining room is about 15 by 21 1/2 feet. A large window at one end looks east over a street and parking lot below and red brick townhouses beyond.

This large room allows for a variety of furniture placement, but putting a dining area with tables and chairs closer to the kitchen would make sense.

The master bedroom and bathroom are to the left of the living/dining room; the second bedroom and bathroom are to the right.

The second bedroom is about 11 1/2 by 13 feet. It has beige, taupe and gray carpet that ties in nicely with the chestnut-hued laminate wood floor in the living room and kitchen. This room has a walk-in closet and a glass door that leads to a balcony enclosed by a black wrought iron railing. The view here is to the east.

The bathroom is at the end of the hallway outside this bedroom. It has a cream-colored ceramic tile floor, a chestnut-hued vanity with a granite counter in gray, black and green tones and a glass-enclosed shower.

A closet outside the bathroom contains a full-size washer and dryer.

The master bedroom is on the other side of the living room. It also measures about 11 1/2 by 13 feet. It is reached via a door from the living room that can be closed for privacy.

The master bedroom has a large walk-in closet and two windows with a view to the east. There is a Juliet balcony outside the windows that provides a decorative element to the exterior of the red brick building.

The master bath has the same upscale decor as the other: cream-colored ceramic tile floor and chestnut-colored vanity with a granite counter. However, instead of a shower, it has a white soaking tub.

Rents range from $1,600 to $2,050 for a one-bedroom apartment; $2,050 to $2,350 for a one-bedroom with den; $1,995 to $3,350 for a two-bedroom, two-bath plan;and $3,600 for a two-bedroom, two-bath unit with den.
