Lisle was the land of opportunity for Carmel on Saturday, but the Corsairs didn’t take advantage as they split a doubleheader with host Benet.
The No. 2 Corsairs dropped Saturday’s first game 7-4 before rebounding with a 6-3 victory in the nightcap.
A sweep would have left Carmel tied for the lead of the East Suburban Conference with Marist (20-5, 10-2), which split a doubleheader with St. Viator.
The Corsairs salvaged the second game with a complete-game performance from Bobby Lyne (7-2), who struck out seven and allowed four hits.
“I definitely wanted to keep us in the conference race,” Lyne said. “We needed to win — I just hit my spots.”
Zach Amrein singled in the first run in the opening inning and doubled home the last in a four-run fifth for Carmel (20-5, 9-3).
“You do all you can to play like the first game didn’t happen,” Amrein said. Benet (14-5, 8-4) scored in each of the first four innings to break a three-game skid. Mick Doyle delivered two RBIs in support of Brian Moloney (4-1).
