A heaping dose of Spider-Man, a hot love triangle and a dash of new villains turned out to be the recipe for a record-setting weekend at the box office.

“Spider-Man 3” made box-office history, sinking last year’s record-holder “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” by earning an estimated $55.8 million in ticket sales its first day and $148 million in its first three days.

“If you could imagine the best kickoff to what could be the biggest summer of all time, this is the scenario,” said Paul Dergarabedian, president of Media By Numbers, a company that tracks box-office sales.

“S-M3” could keep everyone in its web for a while — the next potential blockbuster doesn’t arrive in theaters until “Shrek the Third” opens May 18.
