A pill might one day achieve the same calorie-burning effects as vigorous exercise. Ronald M. Evans of the Salk Institute in San Diego has developed a drug that revs up cellular metabolism, and it worked in tests on mice that had been put on high-fat, high-calorie diets. The mice also were able to exercise twice as long. One caveat: Mice aren’t people, and researchers are moving cautiously before any human testing can begin.
