John N. “Jack” Wirkus, age 82, a resident of Naperville, IL for 12 years, formerly of Chicago, IL, died Sunday, May 6, 2007 at his home. He was born May 25, 1924 in Chicago. Beloved Husband of Wanda H., nee Boczar, Wirkus of Naperville, whom he married June 14, 1947; loving Father of Judie (Ken) Wolski of Naperville and John “Jack” (Teresa) Wirkus of Naperville; adored grandfather of John Wirkus, Matt Wolski, Mary Wirkus and Andy Wirkus; devoted son of the late John A. and Anna Wirkus; dear Brother of Mariann (Howard) Shumate of St. Louis, MO, Jerome (Virginia) Wirkus of Joliet, IL and a late infant brother; fond uncle of seven; great-uncle to many and great-great-uncle of one; dear brother-in-law of the late Walter and Stanley Boczar. John grew up on Chicago’s Northwest Side and was a graduate of Carl Schurz High School. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II as a member of the Second Armored Division. A Silver Star Medal recipient, John was a participant in the Battle of St. Denis LeGast and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a member of Judd Kendall VFW Post #3873, St. Thomas the Apostle Church and was an avid Chicago White Sox fan. Visitation Thursday, May 10, 3 to 9 p.m. at Friedrich-Jones Funeral Home, 44 S. Mill St., Naperville. Closing Prayers will begin Friday, May 9, 9:45 a.m. from the funeral home and will proceed to a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Rd., Naperville.
