I LOVE…
. . . the asparagus and shiitake mushroom soup at Janina’s Cafe (1550 E. Main St.) in St. Charles.
— Elizabeth Polonia, St. Charles
. . . riding my bike past the Intelligentsia coffee roastery on Fulton Street on the way to work each morning. It’s almost as good as a cup of Flor Azul!
— Robin Jenkins, reporter
. . . the Old Irving Park neighborhood. I walk this neighborhood regularly, enjoying the character of the old homes in different states of renovation, the big yards with few fences, and the neighborhood kids of all ages playing outside like I did growing up.
— Kelly Carney, Chicago
I HATE …
. . . Christmas decorations in May. You know who you are. Do your tiny share for your community and take them down! (I’ll be writing again in September to complain about pastel eggs hanging from trees.)
— Deb Barnett, Kenilworth
. . . when people bring their designer coffee into a breakfast establishment. If their coffee isn’t good enough for you, you are probably too good for their food too. Eat at the designer coffee place.
— Kevin Meehan, Willowbrook
. . . restaurants that are so noisy that you can’t hear the person sitting next to you. It would be easy for restaurants to put some noise-absorbing fabric — hangings, cushions, furniture — to make conversation easier. It’s not pleasant to have to SHOUT SHOUT SHOUT all the time to one’s dinner partner.
— Sylvie Romanowski, Evanston
