The Brewers beat the Nationals 3-1 to cap their best homestand in 15 years at 9-1. They have the best record in the majors at 24-10, but they play 13 of their next 16 games on the road. “I think there’s just kind of this quiet confidence in the team,” outfielder Geoff Jenkins said.
David Wright and Carlos Delgado helped the Mets rally for a 5-3 win over the Giants. Wright had a tie-breaking two-run double in the ninth, while Delgado splashed a home run into McCovey Cove and drove in the tying run with an eighth-inning double.
John Smoltz got the best of his former teammate Greg Maddux as the Braves beat the Padres 3-2. Smoltz pitched seven innings, scattering seven hits, striking out seven. Maddux (5 1/3 IP, 4 hits, 1 run) got a no-decision as Cla Meredith surrendered the lead in the seventh.
THREE DOWN
The good news for Dave Roberts: He smacked a two-run homer in a 5-3 loss to the Mets. The bad news: The Giants outfielder expects to have arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow to remove floating bone chips. Roberts could be out for at least four weeks.
Randy Johnson was cruising, He struck out nine in six innings as the Diamondbacks opened a 3-0 lead on the Phillies. The 43-year-old tired in the seventh, loading the bases. Johnson was pulled for Brandon Medders, who gave up a pinch-hit grand slam to Ryan Howard.
The Blue Jays lost their eighth straight, falling 9-3 to Daisuke Matsuzaka and the Red Sox. The Jays mustered just five hits in seven innings off Matsuzaka. They entered Wednesday with a .211 batting average during the skid.
