OIL GONE: Between 100,000 and 300,000 barrels a day of Iraq’s declared oil production over the past four years is unaccounted for and could have been siphoned off through corruption or smuggling, according to a draft U.S. report. The Government Accountability Office review, obtained by The New York Times, also offered alternative explanations, including the possibility that Iraq has been overstating its oil production.
CHENEY MAKES CASE: Vice President Dick Cheney went to Saudi Arabia in a bid to overcome Saudi skepticism over the U.S. military strategy to secure Baghdad and the leadership capabilities of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Cheney met with King Abdullah at a palace in the northern city of Tabuk on Saturday.
U.S. DEATH: The military announced the death of a U.S. soldier from a bomb attack Friday near Iskandariyah, 30 miles south of Baghdad.
IRAQI TOLL: At least 30 Iraqis were reported killed or found dead in Iraq, with 17 bullet-riddled bodies having been located in Baghdad.
