Tony Gwynn Jr. had three hits and scored three times from the leadoff spot in the Brewers’ 12-3 win over the Mets. The son of the former Padres All-Star also displayed his arm from right field when he threw out David Wright trying to stretch a single into a double.
Jason Giambi returned to the Yankees’ starting lineup for the first time in four games, wearing flat-soled, sneaker-like shoes to better cushion the spur near his left heel. He batted fifth as the designated hitter against Mariners right-hander Miguel Batista.
Texas first baseman Mark Teixeira played in his 482nd consecutive game, matching the Rangers record held by Alex Rodriguez. The last game Teixeira missed was May 20, 2004, when he was out because of a bruised left hand sustained when he was hit by a pitch.
THREE DOWN
Still recovering from arthroscopic surgery on his left knee, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire was unable to make it to the dugout for the second straight game. “I don’t want to be on TV with a (cold compression) machine hooked up to my knee,” Gardenhire said.
Pirates starter Tony Armas failed to win for the seventh start in a row, giving up five runs — four earned — in two-plus innings of Saturday’s 9-2 loss to the Braves, Pittsburgh’s 10th loss in its last 14 games. Armas, 9-12 with the Nationals last year, is 0-3 for the season.
Braves third baseman Chipper Jones was out of the starting lineup Saturday night after injuring both wrists and his left quadriceps in a collision Friday night with Pirates third baseman Jose Bautista. Manager Bobby Cox said Jones might sit out Sunday’s game as well.
