THREE UP
Pirates lefty Tom Gorzelanny (5-2) limited Florida to five singles over seven innings in a 7-0 win. Gorzelanny, 24, of Evergreen Park struck out five, walked none and let just one runner advance to third. He has given up two runs or fewer in six of his eight starts.
J.J. Hardy hit his NL-best 12th homer in the Brewers’ meltdown at Philadelphia. A second-round pick in 2001, Hardy never hit more than 12 homers in the minors but has joined Jose Reyes, Jimmy Rollins, Edgar Renteria and Hanley Ramirez as the top NL shortstops.
Greg Maddux pitched a five-hitter for his first complete game in two years as the Padres beat Cincinnati 7-1. The ex-Cub retired the first 16 batters he faced, struck out five and walked none in his 109th complete game and 336th career victory. He needed only 95 pitches.
THREE DOWN
In Kevin Millwood’s first start since coming off the DL, he allowed a first-inning grand slam and left after five outs with an aggravated hamstring in a loss to the Angels. “I couldn’t get out over my front leg,” said Millwood, who gave up four runs, three hits and three walks.
Orioles outfielder Jay Payton and infielder Melvin Mora traded angry words, nearly coming to blows after a loss to Toronto. Payton, whose groundout ended the game, was upset that Mora had distracted him by taking third base on defensive indifference as Payton was up.
The Royals placed first baseman Ross Gload on the 15-day disabled list with a torn right quadriceps. The ex-White Sox had been Kansas City’s primary first baseman against right-handers. Rookie third baseman Alex Gordon made his first career start at first base Monday.
