The Mid-Continent Conference, which includes Western Illinois, is changing its name to The Summit League.
The new name for the conference will take effect June 1, conference officials said Tuesday.
The Elmhurst-based conference was established in 1982 as the Association of Mid-Continent Universities, later changed to the Mid-Continent Conference.
*The Atlantic Coast Conference lived up to its pledge not to cut the amount of money awarded to its member schools despite expanding from nine to 12 members.
Schools received an average of nearly $11 million apiece during the conference’s first year with 12 teams. That’s nearly the same amount each school received before it expanded, according to the league’s tax filings.
*LSU assistant Bob Starkey, who led the team to the women’s Final Four as an interim head coach last season after Pokey Chatman was fired, has been promoted to associate head coach by new head coach Van Chancellor.
*Iowa State guard Dodie Dunson, one of the Cyclones’ best players off the bench last season (averaging 5.2 points, with 30 three-pointers as a freshman) is transferring to another school, the university said, leaving the team with no active scholarship guards on the roster with Division I experience.
