Jesse Litsch, starting in place of Roy Halladay, pitched into the ninth inning in his major-league debut as the Blue Jays beat the Orioles 2-1. He became the first Blue Jay to win his debut as a starter since Gustavo Chacin beat the Yankees on Sept. 20, 2004.
Magglio Ordonez hit a three-run homer over Fenway Park’s Green Monster to give the Tigers a 4-1 lead in a 7-2 win over the Red Sox. Ordonez is 15-for-33 against Tim Wakefield and batting .369 (94-for-255) against Boston with 13 homers and 54 RBIs in 68 games.
Carlos Ruiz hit a solo homer with two outs in the ninth inning to lift the Phillies over the Brewers 4-3. After Brett Myers allowed Johnny Estrada’s tying solo homer in the ninth, Ruiz connected to left-center off Derrick Turnbow for his third career homer.
THREE DOWN
The Rangers placed pitcher Kevin Millwood on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, a day after he returned to the team and aggravated a hamstring injury that had kept him out for two weeks. Reliever Ron Mahay also went on the DL with a strained rib cage muscle.
The Nationals activated right-handed pitcher Jerome Williams from the 15-day DL so he could start against the Braves — and he promptly went down with a strained rotator cuff in the third inning. Williams had been on the DL because of an ankle injury.
Devil Rays leadoff man Rocco Baldelli left Tuesday night’s game against Texas with a left-hamstring strain after grounding out in the bottom of the first inning. The center fielder is mired in a 1-for-40 skid that has dropped his average to .204.
