Bodies found in garage

Four bodies were found in a garage in a residential neighborhood Friday afternoon on Chicago’s Southeast Side, police said. Two males and two females were found in the garage in the 8500 block of South Saginaw Avenue around 2 p.m., said Police Officer John Mirabelli. He did not know the ages of the victims and said detectives were investigating the scene.

Mob figure pleads guilty

The government’s star witness in its prosecution of top organized-crime bosses in 18 mob murders admitted Friday his role in a conspiracy to conduct the affairs of a criminal enterprise — namely, the Chicago mob. Nicholas W. Calabrese entered his guilty plea before U.S. District Judge James B. Zagel. Calabrese has long cooperated with the government, and pleaded guilty in advance of the trial of his co-defendants, expected to get under way this summer.

2 dead in fire

A woman and her grandson were killed in a fire that broke out in their home Thursday night. Family members Friday morning identified the victims as Easter Cotton, 57, and her grandson Jeffery Cotton, 20. An electrical problem in a bathroom started the blaze in the one-story home in the 4900 block of West Harrison Street just before 5 a.m., said Chicago Fire Department spokeswoman Eve Rodriguez. There were no working smoke detectors, she said.

Samaritan killed by truck

A good Samaritan was struck and killed by a semi-trailer truck Thursday night after he stopped to help a stranded motorist on the Bishop Ford Freeway on Chicago’s South Side, state police said this morning. The victim, Everardo Morales, 33, was struck and killed shortly after 7 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the freeway (Interstate Highway 94) at 98th Street, Illinois State Police Master Sgt. R. Sanchez said. The driver of the semi was not ticketed, Sanchez said.

Woman jumps from bridge

All lanes on Interstate Highway 55 were shut down in both directions Friday afternoon after a woman jumped from a bridge overpass, causing three crashes, state police said.The woman, who police believe was attempting to commit suicide, jumped from a bridge overpass at Weber Road near Romeoville, said police.The woman was taken to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove with non-life-threatening injuries.
