Hard Times: An Oral History of the Great Depression
By Studs Terkel
New Press, 462 pages, $16.95 paper
Studs Terkel, who celebrated his 95th birthday this week, demurs when asked to select his favorite of more than 11 works of oral history. In a weak moment, however, he allows that he has a particular fondness for “Hard Times,” originally published in 1970. The interviews here range from Kansas Gov. Alf Landon, to New Deal policymakers, to activists, to the unheralded, like the woman who wandered between Kentucky and Oklahoma in her quest for work, and self-respect.
