Beatboxing is what makes “American Idol” finalist Blake Lewis stand out; it also draws plenty of snickers from haters. MTV asked a few well-known “voicestrumentalists” how good Blake really is.
Doug E. Fresh, considered by MTV to be one of the greatest beatboxers of all time, says he’s been following Blake’s success, and he likes what he sees. “I’ve seen the kid, and I love him,” said Fresh, who told MTV that he’s negotiating to appear on next week’s “Idol” finale.
On the flipside, “The Human Orchestra” Kenny Muhammad, who’s performed with Matisyahu and Rahzel, says he isn’t impressed. “He’s using it as a gimmick,” Muhammad said. “He’s not really laying it down, and his attitude doesn’t really say, ‘I believe in this.’ “
