Compared to Paris or Rome, Berlin doesn’t rank as a romantic getaway. And yet it’s where the four English lasses from Electrelane found love — or something like it — while writing for “No Shouts No Calls,” their fourth record. The formerly all-instrumental Brighton foursome has warmed to singing, and the results thrill, the seemingly innocent ladies cooing inviting listeners to get up close with personal, positive emotions that stand in contrast to past efforts. Off-key albeit organized, bright and yet gauzy, the mysterious music is equally intriguing. Built-from-scratch arrangements, classically inspired piano segments and fuzzy drones round out Electrelane’s mesmerizing art-rock, which recently landed the foursome a prized opening slot on Arcade Fire’s tour. See the ladies here instead, where they’ll perform a full set.
