Felipe Lopez smacked a tie-breaking grand slam in the eighth and drove in a career-high six runs to upstage former teammate Ken Griffey Jr. and the Reds in an 8-4 victory. Griffey tied Harmon Killebrew for eighth on the home run list, hitting the 573rd of his career.
The Braves’ Kyle Davies dominated the Mets with his arm and his bat. He scattered six hits over eight innings and turned the game into a rout with a three-run homer to center in the sixth in an 8-1 win. An .096 career hitter, Davies hammered a 3-1 fastball off Aaron Sele.
Justin Morneau, the 2006 AL MVP, hit two home runs off Kameron Loe, driving in five runs as the Twins defeated the Rangers 7-1. Morneau hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning and a three-run blast in the fifth. He has 13 home runs, ranking second in the AL.
THREE DOWN
Despite getting two home runs from Jayson Werth and a 3-0 lead, Phillies starter Cole Hamels couldn’t hold it and failed to become the NL’s first seven-game winner in a 5-3 loss to the Marlins. Hamels, who struck out eight in six innings, allowed four runs in the sixth.
Zach Duke’s rough season continued as he allowed six runs (five earned) on 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings as the Pirates lost to the offensively challenged Cardinals 9-4. The left-hander is 0-5 in his last eight starts since his lone victory on April 8 in Cincinnati.
The Yankees’ Mike Mussina allowed a three-run homer to Manny Ramirez in the first inning to kick-start a rough night for the 38-year-old righty. Mussina gave up seven runs on 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings in a 7-3 loss to the Red Sox.
