N. Korea tests more missiles
North Korea test fired several guided missiles Friday into the sea that separates it from Japan, South Korean officials said. Analysts and media reports said the North’s test was in response to South Korea’s launch of its first destroyer equipped with high-tech Aegis radar technology. The technology will make it easier to track and shoot down North Korean aircraft and missiles.
Tour winner admits doping
Former Danish cyclist Bjarne Riis admitted Friday he used performance-enhancing drugs during his 1996 Tour de France victory. Riis said he also used cortisone and human growth hormone. Riis said he used the substances from 1993 to 1998, including during his Tour victory. He said he no longer considers himself a worthy winner of the Tour, and indicated he would be willing to give back the title.
High-speed trains run late
Two high-speed trains designed to cut travel time between Frankfurt and Paris almost in half made their first journey on Friday — and ran 35 minutes late. The France-to-Germany run was billed as the beginning of a Europe-wide high-speed rail network from Barcelona to Budapest, a dream that has been taking shape for years. For now, the new fast train routes will reach four countries.
Aruba renews Holloway case
A renewed investigation into the disappearance of American teenager Natalee Holloway in Aruba has revived her family’s hopes of a resolution after two years. Police have not disclosed why they recently visited the homes of three men who were the last people seen in public with Holloway. But the flurry of activity suggests authorities have not given up on finding the missing 18-year-old.
