A juicy baseball tale
I enjoyed Rick Kogan’s piece on baseball pitcher Jim Brosnan, (In the Loop, April 29), and I share his admiration for Brosnan’s book, “The Long Season.” I also liked “Pennant Race.” I forget which one contains the memorable scene of Harry Caray interviewing Brosnan in St. Louis and Brosnan spitting tobacco juice on Caray’s shoes throughout the interview to retaliate for his relentless criticism of Brosnan’s pitching.

YOUR BROSNAN PIECE brought back a memory. I had just finished reading “The Long Season,” and headed for the Des Plaines YMCA looking for a pick-up handball game. As I laced up my shoes in the locker room of the men’s club, I spotted Brosnan and introduced myself. How about that? Read the book and meet the author half an hour later. He was a fine four-wall player, too.

Not-so-hot cover
I thought your coverage on the “My Best Meal Ever” (April 29) was excellent. I was bothered, however, by your cover featuring chef Grant Achatz and the supermodel, as well as the reference to him as a “Haute cuisine hottie.”
My feeling is that the cover trivializes Achatz’s craftsmanship by reducing him to a pinup.

Rare golfing feat
The article in your Golf Issue (April 1) about holes-in-one failed to mention the rarest of all. On Aug. 13, 1992, Jane Moeller, who was then 71, made two holes-in-one at the Hinsdale Golf Club women’s championship. Your article put the odds against that happening at 72, 250,000 to 1!
She scored the aces on the 4th hole, a 139-yard par 3, and the 6th, a 100-yard par 3. But, alas, she lost the match to Sue Swan.
