Miss Kazakhstan thinks “Borat” is very nice.

The contestant in Monday’s Miss Universe pageant said the movie was good for a laugh, but it also gave much-needed publicity to her country.

“In the end, we have to understand that it was only a joke,” said Gauhkar Rakhmetalieva, who was in Mexico City for the competition.

“As people are looking toward us, we have the opportunity to show how we really are: A modern country with infrastructure and a very developed culture,” she told The Associated Press.

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen’s hit film had angered some Kazakhs for its portrayal of Central Asians as bigoted and backward. The Miss Universe pageant, meanwhile, crowned a winner late Monday. We crossed our fingers for you, Miss Kazakhstan, but Miss Japan took the title.
