Weis says it’s a 3-man QB derby

After saying he would narrow the Notre Dame quarterback race to two by the end of May, coach Charlie Weis called an audible Wednesday. The trio of Evan Sharpley, Jimmy Clausen and Chicago’s Demetrius Jones will contend for the starting job. “Each of these three young men brought something unique to the QB competition,” Weis said in a brief statement. “Evan ran the operation the best, Jimmy threw the ball the best and Demetrius made the most plays.” Zach Frazer was the odd man out of the QB race. Weis didn’t talk to the media, so it was unclear whether Jones’ brush with the law May 17 played a role. A misdemeanor marijuana-possession charge was dropped last week after the owner of the car Jones was driving signed an affidavit stating the pot found during a traffic stop was not Jones’.

He’ll be putting for big dough

Kevin Streelman of Winfield has put himself in position for a huge payday next week. He advanced to the finals of the Ultimate Game at Wynn Las Vegas with a 1-up victory Wednesday over Erik Compton. Streelman, who plays on the Hooters Tour, will be one of 12 players to compete next Thursday and Friday for the winner-take-all $2 million prize at Wynn Las Vegas. A retired Wall Street trader put up the $50,000 entry fee for Streelman. He won $100,000 for reaching the finals, of which the sponsor received $75,000 (the entry fee plus 50 percent of the profit). Under terms of the deal, Streelman would take home $975,000 if he wins next week.

NU’s Kjellman scores again

Like coach, like superstar: Northwestern senior Kristen Kjellman joined Wildcats coach Kelly Amonte Hiller as a two-time national player of the year by winning the Tewaaraton Trophy on Wednesday night. Amonte Hiller won in 1995-96 on NCAA champion Maryland teams and Kjellman in 2006-07 as the Wildcats made it three straight lacrosse titles. “This shows how great our team was,” Kjellman said. “They made me look good. I won it because of them.” Another Wildcat, sophomore Hannah Nielsen, was among the five finalists. Four-year starter Kjellman finished her career as the leading goal scorer in NCAA tournament history (39) and the Northwestern career leader in goals (250) and points (349). Her teams had a 77-5 record.
