When I was at the allergist this weekend, they had a note about the cicadas and were warning people if they are allergic to shellfish that they could be allergic to cicadas too and should not eat them (“Here come the cicadas,” May 29 cover story). Not that I plan on trying them, but I thought I would share this friendly advice before all the recipes start showing up in the paper in the next few weeks.

RedEye contacted a Chicago allergist who confirmed that people who are allergic to shellfish can have similar allergic reactions after eating cicadas. However, there’s no risk of allergy just being around cicadas.
