Chicago Tribune’s Read & Write Young Writers’ Workshop
3 p.m. Saturday University Center/Mulit-Media Room presented by Columbia College
Young writers — and readers — can stretch their creative muscles by attending the Young Writers’ Workshop, sponsored by the Chicago Tribune’s Read & Write summer books program.
The workshop will teach children 6 and older fun and innovative ways to approach writing, especially about books.
The Read & Write Young Writers’ Workshop will be led by Carolyn Alessio, an English/literature teacher at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School and author of “The Voices of Hope/Las Voces de la Esperanza.”
Read & Write is in its fifth year of inviting school-age children to recommend a great book they’re reading by writing a short review (150 words or less) or drawing a picture about it, then submitting it to the Tribune. Many of these reviews and illustrations will be published later this summer in the Tribune’s Books section.
To enter a review or drawing in “Read & Write”:
1. Make sure your work lists the book’s title and author, and your complete name and age.
2. Fill out the permission slip completely.
3. Mail your work and the permission slip to Chicago Tribune Read & Write, Attn. Desiree Chen, 435 N. Michigan Ave., 5th floor, Chicago, IL 60611; or e-mail the review (with a scan of the signed permission slip) to tribmag@tribune.com. Drawings and reviews, which may be edited for length or clarity, must be received by the Tribune by June 29, 2007.
A list of 100 great books for kids of all ages, as well as more information about Read & Write, are available at chicagotribune.com/books.
