THREE UP

Journeyman Jorge Sosa led the Mets to a 7-1 win over Arizona, the fifth time in six starts he has allowed two runs or fewer. Sosa is 5-1; in 2006, he was 3-11. Arizona’s Eric Byrnes: “He’s been throwing strikes. That’s the big difference. He always had the stuff.”

Another solid outing from Cole Hamels helped the Phillies end their four-game losing skid. He pitched his second complete game of the season with five strikeouts and no walks in a 5-2 win over the Giants. He’s the NL’s first eight-game winner. Barry Bonds: “He’s good.”

Justin Germano cemented his spot in the Padres’ rotation with an 11-3 win over the Nationals. He won his fourth straight and is unbeaten in five starts since being called up from Triple-A Portland. Manager Bud Black: “This is a performance game, and he is performing.”

THREE DOWN

St. Louis’ Kip Wells fell to Houston 8-3 for his big-league-leading 10th loss. Playing in his hometown, Wells allowed seven hits and six runs for his sixth straight road loss. Wells: “I don’t necessarily feel I should be 2-10. … If I knew exactly what was wrong, I would have fixed it.”

The Pirates beat the Dodgers 3-1 but ran themselves into out after out. Three Pirates were thrown out at home plate — two in a span of two batters — and they couldn’t score a runner from second on a double. Manager Jim Tracy: “We made some mistakes. We’ll clean it up.”

Chris Capuano’s day started grandly. He struck out his 500th career batter in the first inning en route to a season-high 10 Ks and hit his first career homer in the fifth. But the bullpen let him down in a 5-2 loss to Florida as the Brewers lost the 15th of their last 22 games.
