Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Whether you eat books for breakfast or you consider them convenient separators for your fab new decorative bookends, there are plenty of great reasons to come out to the Midwest’s largest gratis outdoor literary event.

Summer is on the horizon, and that means it’s high time to get your hands on some summer reading material. Get yours at the Tribune’s annual book bonanza, and take advantage of the cool demonstrations, panel discussions, author meet ‘n’ greets and readings while you’re at it.

Authors scheduled to appear at this year’s fair include Anchee Min, Joyce Carol Oates, Lori Andrews, Elizabeth Berg, Marcus Sakey, Sara Paretsky, Studs Terkel and Amy Krouse Rosenthal.

If all of the great programming for bookworms isn’t alluring enough, why not just browse the streets of the fair to check out the stacks of lit on sale and enjoy some outdoor air. Or, if you have access to some, do it for the kids. The Chicago Tribune Kids Alley features performances by Children’s Poet Laureate Jack Prelutsky, Jane O’Connor, Jarrett Krosoczka, and Justin Roberts and the Not Ready for Naptime Players.

10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sat.-Sun.; free, events at Harold Washington Library require tickets. Dearborn Street, between Congress Parkway and Polk Streets; 312-222-3986, printersrowbookfair.org.
