Q. Before my pool remodeling, my two return jets were running clockwise, making the water flow go almost all the way around the pool before the flow would get to the skimmer.

Now the jets are turned to make the water flow counterclockwise, with the first one near the skimmer. Does this make a difference?

A. When you start from a stagnant position, the flow is influenced by the direction, the flow and the velocity of the return jets.

The water must move past the skimmer opening at a slow to moderate speed so that floating debris can be “pulled” into the skimmer.

“I would recommend returning the flow to its original configuration. I suspect it will do a better job of removing floating debris and dust before it has time to saturate and settle to the pool floor,” says Dan Johnson, of Swim Inc. in Sarasota, Fla.
