Early in his political career, William Jefferson picked up a nickname from his political enemies: “Dollar Bill.”

Many say the tag came from Ernest “Dutch” Morial, a shrewd New Orleans politician who would serve two terms as the city’s first black mayor. Jefferson insists its source was a Morial adviser.

Jefferson’s many private business dealings only fueled the image. When he ran for Congress in 1990 against Morial’s son, Marc, replica $100 bills with Jefferson’s likeness circulated around New Orleans.
