Missing girl finds searchers
A 5-year-old Villa Park girl who disappeared two days ago while boating on the Kankakee River walked up to searchers Friday, hours after her grandfather’s body was pulled from the water. “She was a little scared, a little dirty, but for the most part she looked to be just fine,” said Kankakee County Undersheriff Brad O’Keefe. Hannah Klamecki was taken to Riverside Medical Center in Kankakee to be evaluated, O’Keefe said.
Fatal shooting ruled justified
The two Chicago police officers who fatally shot a man after he allegedly charged at them with a meat cleaver and a lead pipe Thursday acted appropriately, police said Friday. Earlier, the man’s girlfriend said he was suicidal and wanted police to shoot him. A departmental review of the shooting of Clinton Morgan, 28, found the shooting was in compliance with policies regarding the use of deadly force, police spokesman Pat Camden said.
West Nile in Illinois
A west suburban Woodridge woman has tested positive for West Nile virus, the first human case in Illinois this year, health authorities announced Friday. The 55-year-old woman came down with the mosquito-borne illness earlier this month, according to the DuPage County Health Department. The state’s first reports of human West Nile cases typically come in July, according to Dr. Eric E. Whitaker, the Illinois Department of Public Health Director.
3 workers burned in fire
Three workers were severely burned Friday afternoon when a fire broke out as they were sanding a floor in a condominium on the city’s South Side. The blaze started around 1 p.m. when sawdust from the floor ignited in a building in the 3900 block of South Indiana Avenue, said Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. Fire officials said all three workers were severely burned, two with burns over their whole bodies.
