Caught up in the Web

I found the story about Dr. Donald Hopkins’ efforts to eradicate guinea worm interesting (“Doctor without borders,” May 20). After I’d read it, I was ready to go on to something else when my eye caught the little block of text within the story advertising some multimedia stuff on your Web site.

I hopped on my computer and I was absolutely blown away by the interviews and the actual footage of this horrific disease. Seeing the worm, which I initially thought was surgical thread, being pulled out of some poor girl’s foot as she cried against her mother’s arm is something I will never forget.

Given all of that amazing footage and the high quality work that’s being produced (It was on the level of a PBS documentary), it would have made sense to call attention to the multimedia presentation more prominently in the magazine. That’s where the real impact of the story was.

WHILE MANY DREAM of making the world a better place, Dr. Donald Hopkins is one of the few people who has actually gone out and achieved something tangible. He is an inspiration to all.

If not Macy’s, what?

To people complaining about Macy’s: We lost the Fair, Boston Store, Stevens, Rothschild’s, Lytton’s and now Carson’s on State Street. Will the boycotters be happy if we have another empty store?

When I retired 17 years ago after many years of school and working in the Loop, I decided to continue going there every Thursday. Field’s has always been my favorite store, and now Macy’s is.

Will those who complain be happy if the sales associates start losing their positions? Wake up. Everything changes. Accept it and be glad it isn’t another empty building on State Street.
