If you give a fig
Figamajigs, chocolate-covered fig candy, pleased everyone who tried them. OK, maybe you need to like figs, but these treats may well convert the others. Bags of candy-coated morsels and candy bars are $1.60-$2 at Apple Valley Natural Foods in Westmont, Blue Goose Super Market in St. Charles, Sunset Foods (where they’re also sold in bulk for $8 per pound) and peapod.com.
Coffee on ice
Seattle’s Best Beach House Blend, a crisp, medium-roast brew, is designed for making iced coffee. Instructions on the bag focus on cold-water brewers, but we used our drip coffeemaker: Brew using 2 tablespoons ground coffee per cup, then chill in the fridge; pour the coffee over a glass filled with ice cubes, add cream to taste. For the record, we liked it hot too. A 1-pound bag of beans is $12 at many Seattle’s Best Coffee cafes in Borders bookstores.
Calcium times two
One container of Stonyfield Farm 2-A-Day yogurt supplies a hefty 500 milligrams of calcium (half the daily recommended amount) and 120 calories. What we liked especially, though, was its great taste and creamy texture. Flavors are wild berry, strawberry-raspberry and apricot-mango for 90 cents-$1.10 per 6-ounce container at Treasure Island, Whole Foods Market, Valli Produce in Hoffman Estates and Arlington Heights and peapod.com.
