Tigers ace Kenny Rogers will make his first start of the season Friday at Atlanta, less than three months after surgery to remove a blood clot from his left shoulder. The 42-year-old was vital in the team’s World Series run last year, winning all three of his postseason starts.
Moments after several dollar bills floated down from the Petco Park stands, the Orioles’ Alberto Castillo hit his first homer in over two years in a 6-3 win over the Padres. The Orioles have won two straight under interim manager Dave Trembley after a nine-game skid.
The Rockies, a major-league-best 20-7 since May 22, completed their first home sweep of the season with a 4-3 win over the Yankees. The Rockies have climbed to within 3 1/2 games of first place in the NL West after holding the Yankees’ offense to five runs in the series.
THREE DOWN
Yankees’ starter Roger Clemens failed in his second attempt to gain career win No. 350 in the loss to the Rockies. He allowed four runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. “I was taking deep breaths on the mound,” said Clemens, who endured 93-degree conditions.
Blue Jays’ reliever Casey Janssen had an 0.95 ERA entering Thursday, allowing four earned runs in 38 innings. The Dodgers weren’t impressed, battering Janssen for six earned runs on five hits. Janssen, whose ERA rose to 2.37, didn’t retire a batter in the Jays’ 8-4 loss.
It hasn’t been a good year for A’s outfielder Milton Bradley, who has spent three stints on the disabled list this season. The team designated him for assignment, meaning the A’s have 10 days to trade or release the seven-year veteran.
