Vietnam’s president meets Bush
President Bush emphasized human rights and democracy Friday during the first visit by a Vietnamese president to the White House since the Vietnam War. Republican lawmakers have urged Bush to encourage President Nguyen Minh Triet to make stronger efforts to stop what they describe as widespread abuse of Vietnam’s citizens.
Daughters drowned in tub
A man drowned his two young daughters in a bathtub and hanged himself at his home in Montclair, N.J., authorities said. The bodies of the 46-year-old man and the children, ages 5 and 6, were found Thursday, just hours after the girls’ mother had dropped them off for a visit, police said. The deaths were ruled a double-murder and suicide, police said.
‘Pacman’ Jones surrenders
Suspended NFL player Adam “Pacman” Jones surrendered early Friday in Las Vegas to face charges in a strip club melee that preceded a triple shooting. He was released on $20,000 bail. Jones is to return to Las Vegas Justice Court on July 23, an aide to Clark County District Attorney David Roger said Friday. The player will plead not guilty to two felony charges of coercion stemming, his lawyer said.

When too many parents fell behind on paying for school lunches, the Chula Vista Elementary School District in California decided to get tough — on the children. They told students with deadbeat parents that they had only one lunch choice: a cheese sandwich. The sandwich, served on whole wheat bread, came with a clear message: Tell your parents to pay up — or no more pizza and burgers for you.
