THREE UP Dustin McGowan’s bid to join Dave Stieb as the only Blue Jays pitchers to throw no-hitters ended when Jeff Baker singled to lead off the ninth. The 25-year-old RHP (3-3) had to settle for his first career complete game, matching a career high with seven strikeouts.

LHP Johan Santana allowed one earned run in six innings and drove in a run with his first career triple in the Twins’ 7-4 win. Santana (8-6), pitching in Miami for the first time, struck out eight and lowered his ERA to 2.83. He left after throwing 97 pitches in 90-degree sunshine.

RHP John Maine allowed two runs and five hits, striking out six without a walk in seven innings as the Mets won 10-2 to complete a sweep of the A’s. It was the 10th time in 15 starts Maine (8-4) has pitched six innings or more and allowed two runs or fewer.

THREE DOWN

Angels closer Francisco Rodriguez gave up the tying run in the ninth for his second blown save in 24 attempts this season. With two outs, K-Rod walked Adam LaRoche, threw two wild pitches and allowed a single to Xavier Nady. The Angels won in 10.

Brewers relievers Chris Spurling and Jose Capellan let the Royals walk away with a win. In the 11th, Capellan walked John Buck, gave up a single to Tony Pena and walked Emil Brown. Spurling came in, and after an out walked Joey Gathright.

Orioles starter Steve Trachsel (5-6) allowed 5 runs, 7 hits and 4 walks in 4 innings of loss to Arizona. Eleven of the 23 batters he faced reached base. “They beat me. I felt like I made a lot of good pitches. Location was good. I just came up a little short,” he said.
