April 2004 – Drafted by the Bears in the second round (47th overall). June 11, 2005 – Picked up unlawful possession of a handgun charge outside a nightclub. November 2005 – Pleads guilty to misdemeanor unlawful gun-possession charge in Cook County; gets 18 months probation. February 2006 – Charged with battery and resisting arrest after a tussle with a police officer outside a Rush Street nightclub; charged with violating his probation. March 2006 – Officer declines to pursue the case; all charges are dropped. Dec. 14, 2006 – Police seize six guns and arrest and charge Johnson’s bodyguard William B. Posey with marijuana possession during a raid at Johnson’s home in Gurnee. Johnson is charged with six misdemeanors. Dec. 15 – Bears GM Jerry Angelo warns Johnson: “He’s had a history of doing things, and that history has to stop.” Dec. 16 – Less than 24 hours after Angelo’s warning, Johnson and Posey visit a bar, where Posey is shot to death after a confrontation. Dec. 19 – The Bears suspend Johnson for one game. Feb. 8, 2007 – Johnson pleads guilty to violating his probation during the 2005 gun case. March 15 – Johnson is sentenced to 120 days in jail and fined $2,500. March 16 – Johnson begins serving his sentence. April 3 – Johnson pleads guilty to possession of a firearm without a state Firearm Owner’s ID — a misdemeanor — in Lake County. He receives credit for time served. May 13- Johnson is released from jail after 60 days. June 4 – NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell suspends Johnson for eight games, but says the suspension can be shortened to six with good behavior. Friday – Johnson is issued a citation in Arizona for “being impaired to the slightest degree” while driving. He was cited for going 40 mph in a 25 mph zone. He submitted blood to determine his blood alcohol content. Monday – The Bears release the defensive tackle.
