The developer of the planned Chicago Spire, the twisting 150-story lakefront skyscraper that will be the nation’s tallest building, announced Tuesday that construction on the tower’s foundations will begin “within weeks.” The developer, Garrett Kelleher, said he has hired Case Foundation Company to provide 34 concrete and steel caissons that will be drilled 120 feet into bedrock to support the 2,000-foot-tall tower. Its designer is Spanish-born, Zurich-based architect Santiago Calatrava.
