Long-awaited job
Brown has finally taken over as Britain’s prime minister, fulfilling an agreement that he and departing Prime Minister Tony Blair reportedly made during dinner in 1994.
None of Blair’s flair
The son of a Presbyterian minister, the 56-year-old Brown is considered the quintessential dour Scotsman, cerebral and uncharismatic. He is a man of modest personal habits and guards his private life with his wife, Sarah, and two sons.
Steady force
Brown was chancellor of the exchequer, in charge of Britain’s treasury, for a decade. He has shown an interest in using government to promote social justice. A supporter of the 2003 invasion of Iraq, he has since favored plans to reduce the British force there.
