THREE UP
Greg Maddux earned his 340th victory, outpitching 22-year-old Matt Cain to lead the Padres over the Giants 4-2. Maddux (7-4) won for the fourth time in five decisions. The 41-year-old former Cub gave up one run and five hits in seven innings.
Jorge De La Rosa won for the first time since May 13 as the Royals beat the Angels 1-0 to complete a three-game sweep. Kansas City has won four straight for the first time since July 4-7 last year and at 14-11 is assured of its first winning month since July 2003.
Damian Miller hit his first home run of the season, a three-run shot that sailed into the Milwaukee bullpen in the 11th inning and lifted the Brewers over the Astros 6-3. The Brewers, who have the NL’s best record at 46-32, finished an 8-1 homestand.
THREE DOWN
Roger Clemens’ streak of 200 starts with at least one strikeout ended. He was pulled in the sixth with the Yankees trailing the Orioles 4-0. Pedro Martinez (293) and Javier Vazquez (237) have the top active streaks. Clemens was trying to win No. 350.
Rangers righty Willie Eyre said he felt fine Wednesday, less than 24 hours after he was hit in the chest by a line drive during his first major-league start. X-rays showed no serious injury, but manager Ron Washington said he wasn’t certain whether Eyre would start Sunday.
The Nationals had won the last six games Micah Bowie had started, but in a 13-0 Braves victory, Atlanta knocked him around early — then right out of the game in the fourth inning on Yunel Escobar’s liner off his shin. The lefty allowed nine hits and six runs in 3 1/3 innings.
