THREE UP
David DeJesus homered, doubled twice and scored the winning run on Emil Brown’s sacrifice fly in the 11th inning to nudge the Royals past Seattle 3-2, stopping the Mariners’ eight-game winning streak. DeJesus’ home run, his fifth, was his first in 247 at-bats.
Jason Hirsh threw six shutout innings to beat the Mets and added two singles, including a two-run chopper to cap the Rockies’ six- run third. But the right-hander sprained his right ankle on a pickoff attempt in the sixth and was lifted for a pinch-runner.
Catcher Damian Miller homered twice during a four-hit night, including a grand slam in the Brewers’ seven-run seventh. His seven RBIs matched a club record. Miller has three homers and 11 RBIs in his last two games after having no homers and six RBIs all season.
THREE DOWN
Masumi Kuwata, the Pirates’ 39-year-old rookie who is realizing a career-long goal by pitching in the majors, watched his ERA climb from 2.53 to 7.94 as he gave up seven runs to Milwaukee in two-thirds of an inning. “I’m really disappointed with myself,” he said.
Torii Hunter went hitless with a strikeout, leaving him 0-for-25 with 14 Ks in his career against the Yankees’ Roger Clemens. Still, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said he didn’t consider giving Hunter a night off. “I tell him to swing harder, that’s all,” he said.
Boston’s Julio Lugo, back in the lineup after a three-game benching, went 0-for-2 and is hitless in his last 33 at-bats, dropping his average to .189. The crowd chanted “Let’s go, Lugo!” when he came up with the bases loaded in the seventh — and he promptly grounded out.
