THREE UP

Ryan Howard went 2-for-2 with a sacrifice fly and a walk in the Phillies’ 9-0 win over the Padres to finish off an 11-for-22 trip with five home runs, 13 RBIs and 10 walks, including 7-for-10 with two homers, eight RBIs and eight walks in four games against the Padres.

Joe Saunders, called up to replace an ineffective Ervin Santana, yielded two runs in seven innings, striking out five as the Angels avoided a sweep and opened a two-game lead on the Mariners in the AL West with a 7-2 victory over the Twins.

Roy Halladay threw a three-hitter as the Blue Jays shut out the Mariners for the second straight game, this time 8-0. Halladay walked one and struck out three to win for the first time in three starts. It was his ninth career shutout and first since May 29, 2005.

THREE DOWN

The Tigers’ Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen and Sean Casey went 0-for-12 off Brian Bannister in a 5-2 loss to the Royals, who are 6-3 in their last three series in Detroit, starting with a sweep that cost the Tigers last year’s AL Central title.

The Padres’ Jake Peavy, who started the All-Star Game, yielded four runs on nine hits in a 9-0 loss to the Phillies. Peavy threw 110 pitches in six innings of work as he fell to 0-4 in his last five starts with an ERA of 4.06. His ERA was 1.98 before the skid.

Dodgers right fielder Matt Kemp dropped Shawn Green’s one-out fly ball in the top of the ninth, allowing pinch-runner Anderson Hernandez of the Mets to score the tying run in a 5-4, 10-inning loss. He also struck out with two on in the bottom of the 10th.
