Ingmar Bergman: 1918 – 2007
Filmmaker’s influence widely felt
Director Ingmar Bergman, whose work elevated filmmaking to an art that rivaled the best in literature, music and theater, has died at age 89. It was Bergman’s willingness to take on the dark sides of human drama that lifted his art: love, death, guilt, redemption, psychological and sexual traumas, and the relationship of man and God. Said one Chicago film expert, “He had no fear. He would, a la ‘Star Trek,’ boldly go where no man had gone before.” The result was several classics during Bergman’s nearly 60-year directorial career, including “Wild Strawberries” (1957), “Through a Glass Darkly” (1961), “Scenes From a Marriage” (1973) and “Fanny and Alexander” (1982).
