Illinois received a scare during its Saturday night scrimmage at Rantoul High School when receiver Arrelious Benn went down with a shoulder injury. But a spokesman said Sunday that Benn suffered a sprained right shoulder and is expected to miss only a couple of days of practice. Juice Williams completed 8-of-16 passes for 99 yards and one TD. Rashard Mendenhall led all rushers with 47 yards on 10 carries.
– Forward Abby Wambach and midfielder Carli Lloyd each scored twice as the U.S. women ripped New Zealand 6-1 Sunday at Soldier Field in their next-to-last tuneup before next month’s women’s World Cup in China. Wambach scored the game’s first and final goals and moved into fifth place among U.S. women with 77 career goals. The Americans, now 5-0 in a pre-World Cup tour, peppered New Zealand goalie Jenny Bindon with 10 first-half shots while opening a 3-0 lead.
– It was perhaps the best money Catherine Day Phillips ever spent, when she and her husband dropped $2,500 to buy Jambalaya in 2003. On Saturday, the 5-year-old gelding from Canada won the 25th Arlington Million — and made Phillips the first female trainer to win the prestigious turf race.
