DRIVES

* Interact, a community service club at Cary-Grove High School, will collect school supplies for a Chicago elementary school through Aug. 30. Pens, pencils, crayons, glue, paper and folders can be brought to the school’s office, 2208 W. Three Oaks Rd., from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

*The Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club of Long Grove will hold its 12th annual golf outing at 11:30 a.m. Sunday at Buffalo Grove Golf Club, 48 Raupp Blvd. Dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. at Lou Malnati’s in Buffalo Grove. The cost is $95. Dinner only is $20 and $5 for kids. Proceeds will benefit the Jack Rizman Memorial Fund to provide musical concerts and programs for Beth Judea and the community. Call 847-634-0777.

* Hosta Happening to raise funds for Heifer International will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 8 at Rich’s Foxwillow Pines Nursery, Inc., 11618 McConnell Rd., Woodstock. More than 350 varieties of hostas will be sold. There will a seminar on hosta leaf identification at 10 a.m. and a presentation on conifers for the shade garden at 1 p.m. An auction of rare and unusual hostas will begin at 3 p.m. Heifer International gives farm animals to Third World families to help them gain independence. * Big Brothers Big Sisters of McHenry County is raffling a 2007 Jeep Wrangler 2-Door 4X4 to support its mentoring programs. About 1,200 tickets will be sold for $50 each for a drawing on Sept. 8. *The inaugural Barrington Concours D’Elegance: Legends & Legacies will be held Sept. 14 to 16. Events include a golf tournament at 8 a.m. at Makray Memorial Golf Club in Barrington, and a road rally from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., with breakfast and registration at 7:30 a.m., Sept. 15. The Concours D’Elegance classic car exhibit will be on display from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., a Ride & Drive event sponsored by Porsche and a book signing by photographer Michael Furman Sept. 16 at the golf club. VIP tickets for the Concours D’Elegance cost $75 in advance and $80 on Sept. 16. General admission tickets cost $25 and $30. Ages 11 and younger are free. The fee is $125 to participate in the road rally. All proceeds will benefit the Barrington Hills Conservation Trust, Cowboy Dreams of Illinois and Hospice of Northeastern Illinois. *The Literacy Connection of Elgin will hold an orientation session for adult literacy tutors from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Sept. 5 in the Schaumburg Township Hanover Park Branch Library, 1266 Irving Park Rd. Training workshops will follow evenings on Sept. 10, 12, 17, 19, 24 and 26. Once trained, tutors are matched with a student for tutoring one to two hours a week at a time and place of their choosing. *Volunteers are needed to collect donations and hand out Jelly Belly candy at intersections and stores in Arlington Heights during the annual Clearbrook Jelly Belly Days Sept. 6 and 7. *The Rolling Meadows Police Department will hold a 22-hour training course for the Citizens Emergency Response Team, part of the Department of Homeland Security’s Citizens Corps, beginning Aug. 30. Team members receive training in basic disaster response skills such as fire safety, light search and rescue, medical operations and personal readiness. The courses are free. *The next session of the free federal Community Emergency Response Team class will begin Sept. 10 in the Emergency Operations Center at the Palatine Village Hall, 200 E. Wood St. The course teaches volunteers basic disaster preparedness, signs and psychology of terrorism, light search and rescue, fire safety and disaster medical operations.
