Rapper/producer Vyle grew up hating hip-hop. The MC was more interested in comic books, anime and John Carpenter films than music.
Then during his freshmen year at Whitney Young High School, Vyle heard a tape by a group of South Side rappers.
“These cats were just all over the place with their [rhymes],” Vyle said. “There wasn’t this strict structure. It was all very free-form.”
The rapper began experimenting with this more organic approach to music, self-releasing his debut “Post-Paleontologist” during his junior year. Now his glitchy songs bear the influence of Chicago house, ghetto house and juke.
“Man, when I was a kid, I never fit in. I’d be the one watching ‘Robocop’ when everyone else was talking about ‘Thundercats,’ ” the rapper said. “But I think that’s part of what makes [my sound] unique. It’s who I am.”
Vyle plays at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Drakroom, 2210 W. Chicago Ave.
