Dear Tom,

How cold was August 1967 in Chicago? I was on military leave from Iceland and expected hot weather but it never happened. Bill Meyering, Auburn Calif.

Dear Bill,

Your chilly memories are correct; August 1967 was certainly not a “poster month” for hot weather in Chicago. In fact the month’s average of 69.2(degrees) was 5(degrees) below normal and at the time was the chilliest August ever at Midway Airport since 1928. The high temperature for the month reached only 88(degrees) occurring on August 2. Overall the month featured four days with highs in the 60s and 13 days where maximum temperature remained in the 70s. The early morning lows of 51(degrees) on the 12th and 53(degrees) on the 13th established new low temperature records for the dates, but both of those records have now been eclipsed since the move of the official site to O’Hare in 1980.
