Here at RedEye, we like to play a little game called “The Translator.” Here are some quotes from this week’s newsmakers — and our take on what they’re really saying.

“I am not gay. I have never been gay.”

Idaho Sen. Larry Craig [ who earlier this month pleaded guilty to a charge related to alleged disorderly conduct in men’s bathroom ]

Translation: “I have never watched ‘Brokeback Mountain’ and will never watch ‘Brokeback Mountain.’ “

“Dogfighting is a terrible thing, and I do reject it. … I will redeem myself. I have to.”

Michael Vick [ in his first public remarks Monday, after pleading guilty to a dogfighting charge in Virginia ]

Translation: “I am looking for a job.”

“It has been one of my greatest privileges to lead the Department of Justice.” Alberto Gonzales [ announcing his resignation Monday as U.S. attorney general ]

Translation: “It has been one of my greatest privileges to grovel at the feet of George W. Bush.”

“This is not pork barrel. This is good money to be used for good programs in the community.” Mayor Daley [ criticizing Gov. Blagojevich’s state budget cuts Monday ]

Translation: “This is not a pork barrel. and please pay no attention to that overwhelming smell of bacon.”
