Fall fashion doesn’t end with clothing. RedEye talked with Brenda Berry, a stylist at Chicago’s Brilli Salon, about fall’s top three hair looks. Cheryl Santucci, director of Beauty and Retail at Mario Tricoci salons, revealed her secrets for doing fall’s hottest makeup looks at home.

Film noir

This look of big, soft, sultry waves is reminiscent of old Hollywood glamor, Berry says. It works best on wavy hair and most lengths, from shoulder to midlength long hair. Here are Berry’s steps to the look:

* Spray wet hair with Bumble andBumble’s Does It All spray ($28.95 from amazon.com) and let it air dry.

* Curl hair with 1 1/4- or 1 1/2-inch curling iron, spraying Does It All on each section. Start with the top of the head in three sections and wrap hair horizontally around the barrel.

* Let hair down and brush lightly.

Matte strands

Matte is in, Berry says. So forget about adding extra spritzes of shine serum to hair. A simple way to create the matte strands look? Don’t wash your hair for a few days. Use Bumble and Bumble Hair Powder ($39 at fredsegalbeauty.com) on your roots and style as desired, putting hair down or up.

Super sleek

Instead of pulling out a curling iron to achieve this classic ’60s look, Berry suggests you sleep on your wet hair.

* When you wake up, prep your hair with Bumble and Bumble Defrizz ($29.50 at amazon.com).

* Flat iron your hair in sections. This will leave your locks lively and not lifeless.

MAKEUP

Eyes

“Color is really big,” says Santucci, adding that shades of blue, purple and green are very popular for fall. She suggests doing a colorful smoky eye that is very blended. Her advice is to start with a base, smoothing it in with a brush from the lashes all the way up to the brow. It’s important to get the skin tone as even as possible, she says.

She suggests using a lighter eye shadow color in the plum family to smooth over the base.

Use a darker color in the crease of the eye and brush up, using a different brush. Liner also can be applied classically over both the top and bottom lids, or opt to make it thicker and winged out.

“Liner really makes a statement,” Santucci says.

Lips

Fall offers two top lip looks, Santucci says — pale and undefined or a perfect shade of red.

“The undefined look is for the younger woman, someone who still has full lips,” she says. “It is less defined, with no heavy liner. Less glossy and more creamy.”

The darker shades, by contrast, are “bold, statement colors and much more defined,” Santucci says.
