Dear Tom,

In what months has Chicago never recorded a 90(degrees) temperature?

Richard Lurie, Chicago

Dear Richard,

Since Chicago weather records began in late 1870, the city has recorded a temperature of 90(degrees) or higher in half of the year.

The city’s 90(degrees) season has begun as early as April 10 and 11 in 1930 with back-to-back highs of 90(degrees), and extended as late in the year as Oct. 6 in 1963 when the mercury soared to 94(degrees).

If the city’s season of 90s is to ever be extended, it would likely be the month of March that would come into the fold. Two March days have come close to reaching the 90(degrees) hot weather benchmark: March 29, 1986, with a high of 88(degrees), and March 31, 1981, with an 87(degrees) maximum. The highest temperature that November has ever mustered was only 81(degrees), which happened back on Nov. 1, 1950.
